Taking an example to talk about English lesson observation and evaluation

【摘 要】 在教研活动中,为了更好地促进教师的专业成长,听课、评课成了高中英语教学的重要有效手段之一。本文在前人研究的基础上,以一位高中英语教师的课为例,创造性地提出了“听评结合”的“听前假想、听中记录思索、听后反思小结”的听评课有效方法。

Senior English lesson observation and evaluation is very common in the senior middle school. It is a good way to train the teachers and improve them. However, although many English teachers often conduct the English lesson observation and evaluation, quite a lot of them can not do it very well. Here, I will take Mr. Li’s lesson an example to show how to do it well.

1. Before lesson observation and evaluation

As for lesson observation, the teachers should make preparation before lesson observation, if they want to learn some knowledge from lesson observation. For example, they should make a contrast of the knowledge of the lesson content with the teaching designed by them. As I look at you with my lens, I consider you a mirror, I hope to see myself in you and through your teaching.Therefore, before lesson observation, we should know something about what the lecturer will teach. Then we can compare his/her teaching with ours easily when we conduct the lesson observation.

2. While lesson observation

In lesson observation, we must use the dialectical view looking at other teachers’ classes, and learn how to discover their advantages and disadvantages. So while we observed Mr. Li’s teaching and took notes, we should watch how he organizes the class, how he uses the different teaching strategies to break through the teaching important and difficult points and the students’ reaction to the lesson. At the same time, we may conclude Mr. Li’s personal qualities in English teaching and his disadvantages. At first, Mr Li asked their students to listen to the different kinds of beautiful music when showed some pictures to the students about famous music band on the screen. Asked them to try to guess who he/she was and what they were. Then he tried different ways to improve the students’ reading ability such as Fast reading, Scanning and careful reading. In the end he together with his students summed up the lesson and then assigned the homework. From it we can easily find out Mr. Li’s advantages and disadvantages. The first is some problems about his teaching wit. He ignored a student who was late and even critic a girl who could not answer his question before class. But his beautiful handwriting and fluent spoken English as well as good organization of the lesson struck me most.

3. After lesson observation

(1) About teaching aims

To see whether he has achieved the teaching aims or not. In this lesson, Mr Li used many activities to improve the students and has achieved teaching aims successfully.

(2) About teaching key and difficult points

To see how he settled the problem of the key and difficult points of the lesson in this lesson, Mr Li used many reading ways to improve the students’ reading ability, which is appreciated,

(3) About teaching strategies and students’ learning strategies

Mr. Li used task-based teaching approach to organize the lesson. He paid attention to improve the student’s abilities and used individual work, pair work, and group work to train the students’ cooperative and communicative skills, which is good to the students. The students were happy to take part in different kinds of activities.Therefore,between the students and Teacher or among students, they cooperated well with each other.However,we can not do such things, “She(Teacher) neglected whether the student had absorbed the knowledge and learned the learning methods, and whether the students liked to get the knowledge in that way”.

(4) About the teacher himself or herself.

Through observing Mr. Li’s lesson, we can find out his qualities in teaching English and the abilities of controlling and organizing the class. Of course, he is a good teacher but he will correct some shortcomings such as how to deal with the naughty students and the excellent ones.
