A wealthy man and his son loved collecting rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael.

Then the son went to war and died in battle. The father grieved deeply for his only son. Later, he was given a portrait of his son, and though it was a rather ordinary painting, it became very precious to him. When visitors came to the father’s home, he would take them to see his son’s portrait first, before viewing any of the other great works from his collection.

A few months later, the man died, and there was to be a great auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their very own collection. On the platform sat the painting of the son.

The auctioneer began the auction by announcing, “We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture?” There was silence. Not one person was interested in buying that portrait; they all were intending to buy the more famous paintings.

The auctioneer persisted, “Will someone bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200? What will you give me for the son?”

Finally, the long-time gardener of the man and his son, spoke and said, “I’ll give $10 for it, but that’s all I can afford.”

The auctioneer tried to carry on with the bidding, but by this time the crowd was getting impatient. Somebody angrily called out, “give it to the gardener for $10. Let’s see the master-paintings now. We want more valuable investments for our collections.”

“All right then,” the auctioneer replied, “Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!” He then went on to announce “Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m sorry, but the auction is now over.”

Immediately, there were surprised expressions and questions asking, “But what about the other paintings?”

The auctioneer apologized, but explained, that the instructions in the will stated clearly, that only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that paintings, would inherit the entire estate, including all the paintings.

Therefore, the man, who took the son, got everything.
