Zhang Chuanzhong now serves as chief of China Deng Shiru calligraphy Academy, standing president of China Qing Dynasty Clerical Script Academy, member of China Deng Shiru Clerical Script Review Committee, member of China painting Artists Exchange Association, member of China’s Read Flag Art Gallery, member of the council of Ziguangge Celebrities’ Calligraphy and Painting Works Center and council member of Anhui Calligraphers Council of Chinese Calligraphers Association.

Zhang Chuanzhong is an artist who used to study in the Zhang Xuequn Artistic Creation Advanced Seminar, Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University and learn from Zhang Xuequn, a renowned Chinese calligrapher and Wang Xinhan, a council member of Anhui Calligraphers Council of Chinese Calligraphers Association.

As a beginner in painting, Mr. Zhang was particularly enchanted by Chinese calligraphy. Since his childhood, he has kept imitating exemplary models of calligraphy scripts for twenty years. To practice clerical script, he imitated simple but exquisite Zhang Qian Stela, beautiful Caoquan Stela, upright and primitive Yi Ying Stela, graceful and restrained Confucian Temple Stela, primitive, crude yet tactful and flowing Mount Hua Stela, and modest, concise and elegant Confucian Instruments Stela; To practice small seal script, he first imitated Inscribed Stones on Mount Tai by Li Si. To practice large seal script, he imitated Stone-Drum Inscriptions and so forth. Later he started to imitate the scripts of master Jin Nong, Deng Shiru and Wu Changshuo. To broaden his mind and horizon, garner the essence of Heaven and Earth and cultivate an honest and righteous spirit, he has travelled to Guangdong, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Zhejiang and Jiangsu to visit the famous mountains and rivers there, and gone to Shaanxi, Henan, Shandong, Xinjiang, Tibet, etc to appreciate the grottos and inscriptions on precipices there. He has climbed Mount Tai for eight times to admire the stone inscriptions and to the Confusions Temple in Qufu city for four times to look up the ancient stelae . For dozens of years, he has immersed himself in clerical and seal scripts in ancient stelae . Mr. Zhang said, “It is mother nature that has nurtured my spirit and honed my temperament.”

To uplift his art, Mr. Zhang integrated the long-standing tea art and Zen idea into his works. He has grasped the mystery of calligraphy and painting aesthetics through observing the world. And by tactfully utilizing his understandings towards nature, society, life and worldly affairs, he has his world charged with secrets and wonders. To him, the highest level of artistic creation is not to use painting and calligraphy works to express ambition and feelings, but to seek the rules of the universe. Like tea art and Zen idea, calligraphy is also soothing, enlightening, pleasing and healthy. Like painting, sculpture, music and dancing, it can bring people an experience of joy, fun and beauty.
