《国家地理》在1888年由美国一家非盈利科学教育组织“国家地理协会”（National Geographic Society）所创办，而创办人之一就是电话的发明者贝尔（Alexander Graham Bell）。在过去的一百多年里，它的视角立足全球，不但记录了地理的概貌，还记录了世界政治、经济、历史和文化的变迁以及人类的梦想和追求。在大多数读者眼中，《国家地理》意味着权威、科学性，融合了历史、文学、科学和人类学，更像是一本百科全书，而不仅仅是一本杂志。
