Waiting for Forever is a 2010 American romance film directed by James Keach, starring Rachel Bilson and Tom Sturridge. The film was shot in Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah. As it left a deep impression on me, I’d like to give a brief account of the story and then make a few comments on it.

At the beginning of the film, a terribly heavy train accident happened. Everyone cried and shouted in the narrow compartment, and everything became so tiny and helpless. At the same time, a primary school was in class. While the teacher turned the TV on and tuned to traffic report, all the eyes were focused on the screen. The whole classroom was in dead silence. Something was written and somebody was doomed at the very start.

Will’s parents died in the unfortunate crash. However then he was too little to understand how miserable and terrible things were going to be. Emma was a very closely intimate friend to Will. After school Emma stayed with Will, waiting for his parents to pick him up. Will didn’t realize anything bad had come to his ever warm and nice home until he caught the gloomy and meaningful sight of his brother and noticed a couple of relatives in the house they lived all of the sudden. Since Will loves Emma so much, he went anywhere she were, and he has been following her to California, Los Angeles, Oregon, and San Francisco, just wherever Emma lived. When he heard of Emma coming back home where they grew up together, he caught a ride to be with her, but everyone called him crazy and hoped that he would live a normal life as soon as possible. Emma recognized him and they had a lot of common memory of the happy time spent together to talk about. She wanted to be beside him to help him pull through. Lately her mom also became more and more sensitive and emotional about her father’s health, so Emma would be by her side to give some support. With regard to Emma’s own life, things were not good. She had some unsolved problems with her present boyfriend. She cheated him, and she couldn’t even be in love with him. And her TV show was not successful.

Will was arrested by mistake while the real murderer was Emma’s boyfriend. He killed his friend, the man who slept with Emma. Then he heard that Will was following Emma from place to place, so he planned to have Will play the scapegoat for him. Will was innocent and released on bail. His brother came and planned to take him home. The ice between Will and his brother began to melt. They were the only family to each other, and they had too much common happiness and sorrow experienced together in the past. They loved each other so much that each hoped the other would live in a truly happier way. Will didn’t go home. He led a vagrant life. He walked along the freeway, juggling wherever he went, travelling around the world. He tried to bury his feelings and yearnings deep inside, seeming to be waiting for forever and holding this love for her forever. When Emma figured out everything involved, she was very regretful, missing every moment she spent with Will and every word he ever said. She was thinking that something precious should be cherished even when her father left them. She received a letter from Will. I think that was a perfect love letter, full of magic, much more romantic than any other I had seen.

Personally, I am deeply touched by these classical lines which show Will’s profound love Emma. At this point, the story has gone over an hour, or probably three quarters, what would happen in the rest of the film was beyond my imagination, but somehow I was really absorbed in the amazing love and touched by the performance of the actors / actress. If you had time to see the film, you’d find a topmost innocent boy and a unique true love in the world and be deeply moved by it like me.

This is a new movie, which was on show at the beginning of 2011. Maybe it seems weird and opposed to the traditional love pattern. You may consider some stupid, some out of mind, some unbelievable, but it right hit the tender spot in my heart. One’s first love in life is pure and holy, so it should be cherished in everyone’s heart. It probably takes impenetrable courage and persistence to protect that love and make it last a lifetime, or most of the time there may have to be sheer luck to love and, at the same time, be loved. When two people fall in love with each other and come together, they might be lucky enough and should be thankful. Waiting for forever isn’t empty rhetoric. It involves true feelings and persistence. This film indeed moved me so much.
