对现在的推测用“must+动词原形”,即must do。如:It’s the office! So you must know eating is not allowed here.

He can’t be in the classroom now. I met him on the playground just now.

Mr. Bush is on time for everything. How can it be that he was late for the meeting?

例1 The World Wide Web is sometimes jokingly called the World Wide Wait because it _____ be very slow.

A. should B. must C. will D. can

may / might在表示推测时,may 和might 没有太大区别,只是may的可能性更大。如:The traffic is so heavy these days. I might arrive a bit late, so could you save me a place?

例2 Liza _____ well not want to go on the trip ― she hates traveling.

A. will B. can C. must D. may

may / might与well连用,表示“很可能,极有可能”。 另外,may / might as well表示“最好,不妨做某事”。如:I might as well telephone her to come over.

I must be going now.(对即将发生的行为进行的猜测)

3. may / might be doing常译为“可能在做某事”。may / might not be doing常译为“可能不在做某事”。如:We may be playing tennis at nine tomorrow.(对将来正在发生的行为进行的猜测)

若在否定句中,则需要将must换成can或could,即can’t have done或couldn’t have done。

注意:would / could / might / should do可以表示对现在或将来的推测,也可以表示对现在或将来的虚拟;would / could / might / should have done可以表示对过去的推测,也可以表示对过去的虚拟。

You might have been drowned.(虚拟)
