Xie Yinghua, whose styled name is Mo Tao and assumed name is Sha Qiuren, is the Director of Beijing Motao Orchid Pavilion Painting and Calligraphy Academy, and Member of the Standing Committee of Chinese Artists Association.

In the middle of 1950s, Xie Yinghua (Mo Tao) was born in South Yanzhao Area. Many heroic people and mournful songs emerged in this area in the history, and Mo Tao was influenced by the atmosphere a lot and became magnanimous. He had soaring aspirations since his childhood. That’s why it’s said: Dragons and snakes follow his writing brush because of his chivalry. His writing is just like himself, and he himself is just like his writing. His hometown is Julu, which was one of the 36 counties of Qin Dynasty. This old county has the custom of advocating literacy and education. Mo Tao was imperceptibly influenced by what he saw and heard in this kind of atmosphere, and the Chinese culture has impressed him since he was very young. Mo Tao started studying calligraphy when he was a child and mastered various calligraphy styles. Mo Tao was taught by a master of Chinese culture Zhang Shouping and he has been devoted to the project of “Renaissance of the Orchid Pavilion Preface” and the studies of the Orchid Pavilion Preface. He completed all by himself the “Holy Chapter” calligraphy work and his works of the long series and Mao style of The Orchid Pavilion Preface have reached the peak of perfection.

When Mo Tao was in Xi’an, he absorbed the essence of Chinese culture day after night and visited many famous masters. He obtained some advice from Master Wang Guanjun and Master Yao Su, who were both outstanding calligraphers in the Guanzhong area. He lived in solitude in the Forest of Stone in Xi’an, copying the masterpieces of Ouyang Xun, Yu Shinan, Chu Suiliang, Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan and other masters. After that, he also went to Zhongnan Mountain and Huashan Mountain to learn from hierarchs and hermits, which laid a solid foundation for his artistic accomplishment in the future and contributed to the stable but elegant style of his writing.

He then also travelled in the Qilu Area and studied in Qufu and Linyi, which were the birthplaces of Confucius and Wang Xizhi respectively. In 2001, he started to establish the Orchid Pavilion Painting and Calligraphy Academy. He has devoted all his energy into the study and promoting of the Chinese culture, especially the “Orchid Pavilion culture and art” he has been obsessed with. He has also achieved many things in the academic field and been highly recognized by the experts in this field. The calligraphy style of Mo Tao is unique, which has both the strength of stokes of Qigong Calligraphy AND the charm of Zhongshi Calligraphy. It perfectly combines the beauty of blandness and the masculine soul.

At present, Mo Tao’s works are very popular collectibles among celebrities and domestic and international institutions. In 2011, he attended the 100 anniversary event of Xinhai Revolution and his works were highly spoken of during the exhibition in Zhongshang Gallery, Taibei. Many political elites have the collection of his works.
