Significance of Appreciating English Movies on College Students English Learning

【Abstract】Most of English learners lack the authentic atmosphere to learn English. However, English movies can provide English learners with the authentic environment to learn English and use English. This paper attempts to explore the significance of English movies to college students’ English learning. It is hoped that this paper can make English learners really realize the significance of English movies to English learning.

1. Introduction

With the development of college English teaching, the traditional teaching methods can not satisfy the need of contemporary English teaching. So using films to teach English listening and writing is a very effective way to raise the student?蒺s interests and enhance their communicative ability. (Jiang, 2006:16). At present, the biggest problem in learning English is the lack of the real communicative environment; however, English film can create the best environment for the students to train their listening and speaking.

2. Theoretical basis for using English movies in English learning

Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis theory believes that, in the process of learning a second language, the external input can not be completely passed to the language acquisition device in the minds of learners so as to become learned skills, for it receives the regulation of motivation, self?鄄confidence, anxiety and other emotional factors (Krashen, 1985: 76).

3. Characteristics of English movies

Films provide the authentic voice materials for learners of English writing and listening training, build the language environment and cultivate the students’ ability.

The film show is the scenario of real life; English films can help the learners understand the culture of English speaking countries.They also can increase the ability of cultural communication and expand the knowledge of culture.

Film language as teaching content is to choose excellent original English films, by means of electronic media, visual, listening, speaking in the integration of teaching. Film language scene intuitive, real specific, can fully mobilize the students learning enthusiasm, is advantageous to the students feel the real communicative language, improve communication skills, enhance the consciousness of cross-cultural learning for students.

4.2 Significance of English movies to college students’ English speaking learning

To speak of authentic spoken English, good oral practice environment is very important, English original film can compensate for this deficiency. Brown (2001) pointed out that the authentic language and real scenes tasks could make students aware of the relationship between classroom activities and their oral communication skills in the future.

4.3 Significance of English movies on college students’ English writing learning

For non?鄄English major students, they are often entangled in English writing, do not have rich vocabulary and are unable to accurately express their ideas with the remembered words. However, the use of the English soundtrack movies to assist teaching can promote them to learn new vocabulary accumulation and language expression on the one hand, but also help them understand and consolidate learned vocabulary on the other hand.

5. Conclusion

In the 21st century when the tendency of globalization is prominent, English learning environment and learning resources have undergone significant changes, which have set higher requirements for the current college English teaching. English films in college English teaching is an effective teaching method, so that students can learn language in such a semi-authentic language environment and feel the cultural differences between Chinese culture and Western culture.
