For those who can’t stand the washing-up, help is at hand with one of the most amazing

culinary[烹饪的] inventions in years the bread bowl.

A Birmingham food firm has started making bowls and plates out of dough[面团]. The idea is that diners enjoy a soup, chili[红辣椒] or curry[咖喱], and eat the bowl too.

David Williams, the managing director of Butt Foods, which has developed the idea, admits, “Our banks, our investors all thought we were

crackers[疯狂的]. But we’ve now proved them wrong.”

The company already supplies a chain of pubs with prawn-cocktail注-filled bread bowls. Later this year, some supermarkets will stock the microwavable[可微波加热的] bowl filled with chicken.

Mr. Williams says Butt’s bowls hold their shapes for eight hours without going soggy[

No extra ingredients[成分] have been added to the dough to make it sturdy[坚固的]. Instead, the firm has developed an industrial oven that is able to bake the inside of the bowl at the same time as the outside, giving it a “double crust[面包皮].”

The Story of Keith Lacey, the Factory Manager

Bread bowls in the sense of hollowed out bread have been around for years, but if you pour a curry or soup into them, you get a soggy mess. We wanted to make a bowl that was an effective carrier for wet ingredients but was also soft and tasty, so we experimented for months.

We always knew we could do it, although there were times when I felt like throwing in the towel[认输].

After about six months, and by complete fluke[

we hit that eureka[找到了!] moment when we changed one thing and everything suddenly fell into place. When I first saw our bread bowls on the menu, it was really a great moment.

The big challenge at the moment is making mini bread bowls. There is so much you can do, from sweet brioche[奶油蛋卷] bowls to a cookie bowl concept. Bread bowls would also work brilliantly with chips. You’d just serve them up and eat the whole thing there’s no packaging, so it’s even good for the environment!

Despite the enormous interest there has been in the bowls, we’re constantly[不停地] thinking about the next big innovation[创新]. Innovate or die. That’s the only way we can compete. If you just do what everyone else does, you won’t stay in business.
