《绯闻女孩》是美国的新电视剧集，讲述了上流贵族学校中的男男女女面对这个社会的种种态度和不同的人生。故事的主人公Serena是学校里的风云人物，是男人眼中的女神，所到之处都会受到关注，她身边有着一群出身高贵却精神空虚的朋友，其中最好的朋友Blair就是其中一个鲜明的代表。而我们下面选段中的那位Dan是这一个圈子外面的男生，却意外地捕获了Serena的心，爱情在他们中绽放花朵。

下面的对话是Dan在被Serena放鸽子之后，回到家向父亲表达了对自己感情投入的不确定。

Dad: How was the movie?

Dan: Uh, missable... Literally. I-i don’t know about Serena, dad. I-I can’t tell if she’s worth it.

Dad: What do you mean?

Dan: Well, uh, she’s best friends with this girl―Blair Waldorf―Who is basically everything i hate about the upper east side Distilled into one 95-pound, doe-eyed, bon mot tossing, Label-whoring package of girlie evil.

Dad: No one’s that bad.

Dan: She is. I would barely be exaggerating if I told you Medusa wants her withering glare back.

Dad: Well, if there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that usually there’s something beneath the surface With people like that to make them act the way they do.

Dan: Like what―The o.j. In her mimosa was from concentrate, not fresh-squeezed? And―and what does this say about Serena, That this is her best friend?

Dad: I dated a girl like Serena once―Actually, a lot like Serena. And girls like that are challenging. It’s true. They’re complicated and... Enigmatic...And usually worth it. And the only way you’ll know for sure is to jump in with both feet.

Dan: What happened to you?

Dad: I swam for a while... Till I drowned.

Dan: Oh. Well, that―thanks. That’s a great story, dad.

爸爸：电影怎么样?

丹：可以不看的……字面上来说是。爸爸，我不了解Serena，我不知道她是否值得。

爸爸：这话怎么说？

丹：她最好的朋友，那个女孩Blair Waldorf，正是我憎恨的上流社会的代表。缩水到95磅、小鹿般的眼睛，满嘴名言，全身名牌的女魔头。

爸爸：没有人那么糟糕。

丹：她就是。如果我说连梅杜莎都觉得她尖刻，一点都不夸张。

丹：什么原因？就因为她含羞草鸡尾酒里的橙汁是浓缩的，不是新鲜的。（含羞草汁是一种香槟和橘子汁的饮料）Serena有个这种朋友，这说明她是什么人呢？这是她最好的朋友。

爸爸：我曾和Serena这种女孩交往过，非常像Serena的女孩。那种女孩很有挑战性，真的，她们很复杂，很神秘，却很值得和她们交往。你唯一能确定的就是全情投入。

丹：你后来怎么了？

爸爸：我沉迷了好一阵子……直到无法自拔。

丹：好吧，谢谢。这是个不错的故事。
