Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a series of humorous novels written by American author and cartoonist Jeff Kinney. The books are the journals of the main character， whose name is Greg Heffley. In the form of a child’s diary， they are filled with hand-written notes and simple drawings of Greg’s daily adventures.

There are six books in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series now. The first one， Diary of a Wimpy Kid， was released in April， 2007 and quickly became a New York Times best-seller. The series won lots of awards and honors， including the title of 2010 most favorite book around the world. Each of the six books in the series is in different colors. They are：

In 2010， the first book in the series， Diary of a Wimpy Kid was made into movie by 20th Century Fox. It starred Zachary Gordon as Greg， Robert Capron as Rowley （Greg’s best friend）， and Devon Bostick as Rodrick （Greg’s older brother）. And then there was a second film released earlier this year， which was based on the second book， Diary of a Wimpy Kid： Rodrick Rules， with Zachary Gordon returning as Greg Heffley.

Jeff Kinney is an online game developer and designer and the author of the No. 1 New York Times best-seller Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He spent his childhood in Washington， D.C.， and moved to New England in 1995. Jeff lives in southern Massachusetts with his wife， Julie， and their two sons， Will and Grant.

Q： Did you always want to be an author？

A： No. Actually， what I really wanted to be was a newspaper cartoonist. In college， I had a comic strip called Igdoof， and I was sure I was on my way to becoming a cartoonist after school. But it’s very difficult to break into the cartooning world， and I got rejection letter after rejection letter from comic syndicates. So I decided to try to mix cartoons and text in a new way and to get my work published in a book form. Now that I’ve been published， I think of myself more as a cartoonist than an author.

Q： How did you come up with the idea for Diary of a Wimpy Kid？

A： I wanted to write a story about all of the funny parts of growing up， and none of the serious parts. I had a pretty ordinary childhood， but lots of humorous stuff happened along the way. So I decided to write a book about what it’s really like to be a kid， or at least what it was like for me.

My goal was to write a book that made people laugh. There were certain books I read as a kid that really stood the test of time. I wanted to write that kind of book！

Q： How long did it take you to write the first book？

A： From the time I started until the time the book came out in print， it was nine years. I spent about four years just generating ideas， and another four years writing and illustrating the story. Then it took about a year to get it into print.

Q： Do you think Greg Heffley is a good role model？

A： No， not really. Greg is self-centered and can be kind of clueless. I don’t think Greg is a bad kid， necessarily； but like all of us， he has his faults. Hopefully， readers will understand that Greg’s imperfections are what make him funny. I think that stories with characters who always do the right things are a little boring. I wanted to create a character who was more realistic.
