On Application of TaskBased Approach in English Teaching

Abstract Task-based approach is a language teaching method which emphasizes learning by doing, rising in the nineteen eighties. The task-based approach is based on some theories of language acquisition and the main part of the class is students’ activities. This thesis firstly introduces Task-based Approach, and then provides some suggestions on English teaching so as to improve students’ communicative competence.

1.Introduction

Over the past decade or so, a number of teaching methodologies have developed. Task-based approach was brought forward as an attempt about twenty years ago. And it formed an integrant theory system about ten years ago(鲁子问.2003:6). How to carry out task-based approach in teaching practice and especially how to connect task-based approach with English teaching in China become problems that need people’s research. The present paper tries to provide some suggestions on English teaching on the basis of task-based approach.

2. Task-based Approach

Taskbased approach is an approach to the design of language course in which the point of departure is not an order list of linguistic items, but a collection of tasks. It draws on and reflects the experiential and humanistic traditions described above, as well as reflecting the changing conception of language itself. As we shall see in the next section, it also draws on a growing body of empirical research(Nunan 2001:24).

3. Suggestions on Application of Task-based Approach in English Teaching

Analysis of the teaching content, of course, is a very important procedure in the teaching preparation. The key point of analyzing the teaching content is the analysis of true using purpose and the ability of teaching content to the real life. Then establish learning tasks which are in line with the ability of application.

The knowledge, skills, culture, and emotion are the content of the learning tasks. And they are contained in the teaching contend, which can not show the requirement of application. Therefore, analyzing the using ability that the teaching content points to is the crucial point in the analyzing of the teaching content.

According to the real teaching by applying tasks, when analyzing the teaching content, the teacher should grasp exactly the aim of the using ability of the teaching content which is the key point of the true application of the task design.

We should choose the suitable tasks from real life directly, but, many of them coming from real life and difficult to accomplish for students. Maybe their ability is poor. Maybe it is not suit students’ real interest. Maybe it is difficult to aim for students’ difficulty. 4.Conclusion

Task-based approach can be applied in a very wide field, especially in English teaching. Taskbased approach includes not only the real communicated task of language application, but also includes teaching task of language. The soul of task-based approach comes from the teaching practice, rather than the theoretical research.
