Disturbing images of a blood-stained and shaken Muammar Gadhafi being jostled by angry fighters quickly circulated around the world after the former Libyan leader’s dramatic death near his home town of Sirte, where he was born.

Gadhafi was still alive when he was captured near Sirte. In the video, filmed by a bystander in the crowd and later aired on television around the world, Gadhafi is shown being dragged off a vehicle’s bonnet and pulled to the ground by his hair. He died from a bullet wound to the head. But it was said that no order had been given to kill him.

Gadhafi, being the leader of Libyan at the age of 27, called the rebels who rose up against his 42-years of one-man rule “rats”, but in the end it was he who was captured cowering in a drainage pipe full of rubbish and filth.

France said its aircraft struck military vehicles belonging to Gadhafi forces near Sirte at about 8:30 am (0630 GMT) on Thursday, but said it was unsure whether the strikes had killed Gadhafi.

They had clearly been hit by a force far beyond anything the motley army the former rebels has assembled during eight months of revolt to overthrow the once feared leader.

Pregnant women who consume trans fats from snack foods, fast food and other less-than-ideal fare may give birth to bigger babies, according to a US study.

The study, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, centered on nearly 1,400 pregnant women. It found that the higher the woman’s intake of trans fats―which raise “bad” LDL cholesterol, but also lower heart-healthy HDL cholesterol―during the second trimester of pregnancy, the larger her newborn was.

The study did not prove that trans fats alone boost fetal growth, and if they did, it is unclear how harmful that could be. But there are risks to having a larger-than-normal newborn, says lead researcher Juliana Cohen, of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

Big babies may have to be delivered by Cesarean-section and studies have found that they may have increased risks of diabetes and heart disease later in life, Cohen adds.

“It’s prudent to limit trans fats in your diet anyway. Pregnant women may want to think about how (the fats) could affect fetal growth as well,” she says.

1. According to the study, if a woman take in higher trans fats, what might her second newborn be?

A. lager

B. smaller

C. normal

D. not known

2. Which statement is not true according to the study?

A. Whether trans fats alone boost fetal growth is not sure.

B. The big babaies may have increased risks of diabetes and heart disease later in life.

C. Big babies may have to be delivered by Cesarean-section.

D. The babies may grow faster than normal ones.

In August, China divested $36.5 billion of its net holdings of US Treasury debt. The move was the biggest sell-off of dollar assets by Beijing this year, despite a surge in foreign demand for US financial assets as investors sought a safe haven amid the European debt crisis.

China currently holds $1.137 trillion of US Treasury debt, meaning that the country is still the largest foreign owner of US debt, according to data released by the US Treasury Department on Tuesday. The August reduction was the first time that China had trimmed its US debt holdings in five months after a net purchase of more than $8 billion in July.

Analysts said that the reduction of its holdings of US debt indicated that China has adjusted its foreign-exchange investment portfolio after the US credit rating was downgraded by Standard & Poor’s in August.

Some analysts said that the sell-off does not necessarily mean that China has lost faith in the US dollar. Instead, they said Beijing may want to allocate more assets to US corporate bonds, which offer more stable returns.

Analysts were also unsure as to whether US Treasury data, known as TIC data (Treasury International Capital System), will reveal an accurate picture of China’s holdings of US debt.

They argued that China buys some of its US Treasuries in London. Initial TIC estimates often attribute the purchases based on the location where they are made instead of the origin of the buyers.

1. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?

A. China holds the most US debt.

B. The August reduction was the first time.

C. China have ever continued buying US debt for five months.

D. China held $1.137 trillion of US Treasury debt before August.

2. What’s the reason of China’s cutting holdings of US debt?

A. European debt crisis.

B. The downgrade of the US credit rating.

C. The current economical condition.

D. Protect China’s own interest.

Dongxiang county in Northwest China’s Gansu province is surrounded by water―but for 28-year-old Ma Qiang, severe drought has been a problem since early childhood.Today, his job is to do something about the lack of water and improve conditions in the area.

Dongxiang county has access to four rivers but because of its elevation, 740 meters above the water sources, water needs to be pumped up to the villages.Instead of drawing water from the rivers, most people here get water for their daily use from mountain springs and the households have a donkey to carry the water in wooden barrels over the bumpy, muddy roads.

Ma Handong, 40, from Dafang village, has two donkeys and two sheep in his backyard. His house is built from earth and outside are two cisterns that collect water when it rains. One of the cisterns was sponsored by the “Mother Cellar” project, initiated by All-China Women’s Federation. It mainly helps those living in drought-affected regions to use rain water by building cellars in their yards.

As for the project itself, water is collected when it falls onto the roof of the house and a tube runs the water off into the cistern.

The water is used for essential purposes like drinking and washing. Ma has never used a flush toilet and instead uses a big hole over which people squat, in a cave.

Most villagers in Dongxiang grow potato and corn and there is a saying in Gansu that potatoes from Dongxiang are the best in the country. Yet the harvest depends heavily on rainfall.

The good news for Ma and 90,000 people like him is that a project for drinking water initiated by the Ministry of Water Resources is under construction. It is called the Middle-West Water Project of Dongxiang. It is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.

Similar projects in Dongxiang have been conducted in recent years, including the Nanyang Irrigation Canal, one of the largest projects so far. These projects have, to some extent, helped Dongxiang people get water for drinking and irrigation.

Team sports do kids much good. Sometimes parents pay no attention to these sports because they want their kids to shine in individual sports.

There are leaders and there are followers. There is nothing wrong with being a follower but it’s often emphasized that we should be leaders. Some kids have natural leadership abilities and other times they get leadership because of their physical abilities. In team sports, it is important for each player to know their position on the field. Some were not born to be leaders, those people are not often the stars on a team but the stars would not be there without the followers. Without that help, the leader wouldn’t have been able to score or push forward. All of this is necessary to a team and great for kids to learn early.

High grades came with sports abilities. If kids don’t complete school work in time, their parents wouldn’t let them go to practice. This teaches responsibility. Kids learn what the standards are and know it is their responsibility to reach those standards. Also, knowing the schedule and being on time is good practice for college and career. It helps develop a sense of what is to come and it grows the confidence in the student/athlete.

Team sports can build the confidence needed to avoid bad images. It keeps kids healthy and it also promotes healthy eating habits and lifestyle. When I was playing team sports, I knew that I should not eat junk food and all of my teammates would point it out to me if I ate around them. It was not a bad pressure but a good one. It made me want to better myself for the team.

All of these are an important part of team sports. The friendships made in activities really help with confidence and “fitting in”, healthy lifestyles are often started in sports with the desire to get better, and confidence is sure to grow in a good team environment.

Good afternoon, everyone!

The topic of my speech today is “Cooperate with others”.

In our daily life and study, if we want to accomplish our work efficiently, we must all learn to cooperate with others. Cooperation can save us a lot of time and energy. Additionally, we can learn much from our partners by cooperating with them.

When we cooperate with someone we like, we will feel very happy. We can share our pleasure(joys)and sadness(sorrows)with him. But it challenges us to get along with others to cooperate with someone we dislike(hate). Besides/Moreover/What’s more, we should focus on our work, instead of(rather than)our partners. Perhaps in working together with him for a long time, we’ll learn(find out)that he is a man to get along well with.

How can we become a good partner? In my opinion, we should try to listen to others. If they make mistakes, we also try to point them out. Thirdly, we mustn’t embarrass others to make them in unfavorable position.

Thank you for your listening!
