The advantages of English group’s cooperative learning

Cooperative Learning advocated and implemented at first by a famous educationist called David Koonts in U.S.A. in the seventies of the 20th century, is a kind of teaching theory and tactics system in fact with the interpersonal cooperation and interaction as the essential features in teaching. Group’s cooperative learning advocates dividing the whole class into a studying collective with group as its unit, confirming group leader and recorder of each group, finishing tasks together the teacher assigned before spoken practice classes and doing the records, showing their achievements in different ways in oral classes in order that every student can participate in spoken activities and have an opportunity to open his mouth to improve his language expression.

Ⅰ. Group’s cooperative learning breaks the limitations of class schooling.

Nowadays, most of existing classes are generally all made up of more than 40 students. In one class are too many students so that the teacher has difficulty in making each student have enough chances to speak more within 45 minutes, which will cause only a few activists participating in the classroom activities and most students are only the onlookers. Group’s cooperative learning breaks such a routine teaching situation, simulates small class schooling, has changed the mode of taking teachers as the core and meets the demands of students in different levels. Each study group is one basic unit and each student will have an opportunity to represent himself in the group. Students can help each other. This will create chances to use english for them and reduce embarrassments and pressures at letting them participate in the class.

Ⅱ. group’s cooperative learning makes each student have a chance to study and innovate voluntarily.

In the past spoken practice lessons the teacher often provides a topic in the class and lets students discuss together. Though these activities may give each student some chances to speak, I find that many of them just listen to their classmates who are more positive in making speeches in their groups and they haven’t their views or opinions at all. And the last summary is always confined to several students. They don’t have any pressure completely. On the contrary, each member’s activity presentation will be written down in details in group’s cooperative learning. In this way, because of their active psychology and collective sense of honor, after the tasks are assigned, they will all finish spontaneously. During the time, students are in an initiative and positive psychology all the time. It not merely promotes their language acquisition and application, still makes them to take initiative and study actively and finally harvest happily.

Ⅲ. Group’s cooperative learning strengthens students’ self-confidence.

While assigning the groups because of considering individual differences of students, group’s cooperative learning makes every student in different levels have an opportunity to give full play to their own potency, makes their abilities of language application to get maximum improvement. It creates an active atmosphere of learning where I’m not worse than others and everyone is equal. Studying group is a strong backing of each student. It dispels inferiority complex of some poor students largely and increases their self-confidence. Some students not merely do well in the spoken lessons, have gradually got used to making speeches actively in English classes.

Ⅳ. Group’s cooperative learning makes students learn to cooperate with others and trains their abilities to solve problems in cooperation.

Cooperative consciousness and abilities are the basic qualities that moderns should have. Students tell each other the understandings of a certain task or the gains in the group argue and correct each other. Thoughts and psychological activities of middle school students in the group activities help each other study voluntarily and flexibly. Those with better elements of English help these with bad ones to catch up with others voluntarily and make them have more chances to understand the materials, understand and master knowledge correctly and deeply too. While students are exchanging information and their spirit of cooperation has been trained. The meaning of such cooperative learning has already far exceeded the language learning itself. This will create profitable conditions for students who will enter the society and carry on their work in the future and lay the solid foundation of their career.
