Recently， China Telecom an- nounced in a high profile in Beijing about the third round of massive Internet speed increase in China， through which it officially began to spread the 100Mb broadband. This means that Chinese households are going to get into the“New Age of 100Mb” at a quicker pace.
On September 1， China Telecom’s branch in Shanghai， known as China Telecom Shanghai， geared up the sixth Internet speed increase campaign of“Smarter City”.
China Telecom Assists in ICT-based Projects
On July 12， China’s Premier Li Keqiang held a standing conference of the State Council to study the policies and measures about promoting the investment and put forward the requirements for the national strategy“Broadband China”. China Telecom is to increase the Internet speed for the third time in China. The 6th internet speed increase
China Telecom Shanghai began the strategic deployment of “Metro Optical Network” （MONET） in 2009. From 2011 to now， it already increased the Internet speed five times based on the “Smarter City” project and overcame many difficulties. The average bandwidth in Shanghai increased by 100% annually and it only took two years to complete the upgrade that cost the U.S.， Japan and Korea a dozen years. The MONET project in Shanghai witnessed leapforward development. The campaign with the theme of “New City Images 2007-2012” held by the Shanghai government also listed the construction of “No. 1 fiber-optic city” in China as one of the ten major progresses in five years.
By June， the subscribers to China Telecom Shanghai’s MONET took 73% of the total Internet users in this city. The average bandwidth of the broadband users has exceeded 20Mb. According to NetIndex， CCIndex and 360， Shanghai ranked No. 1 in China in terms of the Internet speed.
Then， here comes the 6th time of Internet speed increase， which will bring the Internet industry of Shanghai to a new height.
