Hephaestus was the god of fire, son of Zeus and Hera.
He was the patron(庇护人) god of metal-smiths. Being an excellent craftsman, he accomplished1 numer- ous prodigies(奇物)of craftsmanship. Such as the palace he built for the gods atop Mount Olympus；he also created arms for Artemis and Achilles.the shield2 for Heracles.He used a volcano3 as his forge （锻铁炉）,the Cyclops as his workmen.
Born deformed（使成畸形） and ugly, he was disgusted and abandoned4 by both his parents. It was said that Hera,upset by his ugliness, flung5 him from Mount Olympus into the sea，thus breaking one of his legs. Later he was east down once again by Zeus from heaven to earth because he sided with Hera in a family quarrel.
In Greek mythology,he was the only god to be physically ugly,however,he was married to the most beautiful goddess, Aphrodite, who was constantly cheating on him and flirting(调情) with other gods or mortals. She was once caught by her husband in an act of adultery() with the war god Ares. As usual, the lame husband pardoned her shameful deed but dragged her brother-lover before the other gods for trial6. Instead of executing7 severe punishment on the illicit (不正当的 )lover of his wife,the fire god just ridiculed8 him publicly,because he was a kind and peace-loving god by nature.
In art,Hephaestus was represented as an ugly old man. He usually wore a short, sleeveless tunic(短袖束腰外衣)and a round close fitting cap.He was symbolized by a hammer and an anvil(铁砧).

在希腊神话中，赫菲斯托斯是惟一的一位外貌丑陋的神，可他却娶了最美的女神阿佛洛狄特为妻。这位妻子经常表现不忠，与其他的人或神调情厮混。一次，这位女神与战神阿瑞斯时被丈夫撞个正着。和往常一样，瘸腿丈夫原谅了妻子的不忠，但他拉着她的兄弟兼情人到众神面前去评理。他并没有严惩妻子的情夫，只是公开奚落他一番，因为从本质上讲，他是位善良的、热爱和平的神。
赫菲斯托斯的艺术形象是一位丑陋的老人，穿着一件短的无袖紧身上衣，戴着一顶紧头圆帽。他的象征是铁锤和铁砧。
