Some Suggestions for Landscape Beginners

Abstract： what kind of landscape is outstanding？ I think this is a question all landscape beginners will ask. Chinese classical garden has two thousand years brilliant history， I think its will benefit our life if we learn Chinese classical gardens from ours predecessors .

1. What is the Chinese classical garden

Chinese classical garden refers to the Chinese garden system of the second phase of the world garden’s history. It is implicit in China's agricultural economy，centralized politics，feudal culture. Compared to other landscape systems on the same stage， Chinese classical garden is the oldest，longest and the most widely distributed. After two thousand years Chinese classical garden gradually developed into a type of landscape garden，which is given priority to artificial and natural form. Chinese classical garden can be summarized into three main types， respectively is the royal garden， private garden and temple garden. The royal garden and private garden are two of the most mature types， arguably the two types of landscape are the essence of Chinese classical garden.IT can be the quintessence of Chinese classical garden on the ideas and landscape gardening technology.

2. Modern is not equal to Westernization

Here I want to tell beginners， modern is not equal to Westernization， now many people don't know modernity of landscape. Modernization is a product of western industrial civilization， therefore modernity is the western modernity in certain significance. Western countries first started the industrial revolution， after one hundred years of rapid development， the modernization of western countries has been succeed， the valuable experience for us is a referential wealth. Western modernity is， however， a result of a series of western political， economic and culture factors agitate continuously in the specific historical period， so the western model cannot be completely copied by any other nation state. At the end of the 19th century the western world has the "modern movement （modern movement）"， which involves every field of art. In terms of landscape， it is based on the thought of industrialization， and reflects the pursuit of the people for the new way of life and the aesthetic standard. Under the influence of the deteriorated ecological environment background and thoughts of the “modern movement”，the "modern landscape architecture" was born， and the garden style changed dramatically than ever. Though modern landscape architecture reflects every aspect of modernity， it isn’t the part separated from the traditional garden， but the inheritance and development. Every state should build their own modern landscape architecture according to their own regional cultural characteristics.

3. Don't design without any purposes

You might think this sentence is nonsense， but in the process of practice it is not easy to do. So what is the meaning of designing without any purposes？ In my opinion， for example， you are tangled on puting a rockwork or puting a drop waterfall in an entrance landscape design. During the time of struggle， you don't consider about the environment of the site or local cultural background.I think this is designing without any purposes.

A good landscape is connotational.In the book 《Yuan Ye》，Ji Cheng said：" Idea first ".It means that there must have a theme first in the creation of gardens， no matter it is classical or modern landscape. Conception comes first in the process of gardening， then build the reality united between ideas and images.，and express the artistic conception through reality， finally， deepen artistic conception through the couplet. The euphemistic emotion expression and the pursuit of combination of environment，people and images in Chiness classical garden， fits to the modern garden which admires simplicity， simplicity，people-oriented， so it can be used in both ancient and modern.

4. The artistic conception of landscape

The artistic conception of landscape，is the highest state of the persuit of landscape. Gardening creation is based on refining and summarization about the natural scenery， and then gives creative emotion to scene. The tourists in the tour，lead thought， produce resonance，and realize emotion and idea contained in the scene，thereby obtaining pleasure in spirit. The "artistic conception" in Chinese classical garden can be traced back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty，I think the mood for visitors is a association and imagination about garden. In fact， the one describes this concept with "artistic conception" is modern scholar Wang Guowei， he mentioned the word in the book《Ren Jian Ci Hua》. In recent years， many garden scholars such as Wang Juyuan， Sun Xiaoxiang apply the"artistic conception" in landscape aesthetics.
