西子湖畔音乐风

对于一个城市来说,从来都需要“新鲜”注入,而所谓新鲜,除了现代化象征意味的科技之外,更要有人格魅力和年轻姿态之类的精神物质。西湖音乐节所呈现出来的温和态度及年轻符号就是这种精神物质。

西湖音乐节大家都不会陌生,从2008年到现在,已经连续举办了五届。作为原创音乐大派对,她从诞生之日起,就如此的与众不同—既不具有迷笛和草莓音乐节的那种与产业链条密切相关的特质,也不同于各大城市争相举办的商业元素先行的主题音乐节。

西湖音乐节在紧邻市中心的西湖之畔、在宽阔而有序的草坪上、在年轻向上的笑脸中间,她更多地表达出了个性和舒适度。按说年轻人才可以为了一个简单的理由而产生“奔赴”的行为,而早已经麻木成瘾的我也因为一场音乐节奔赴异土,这里所产生的喜剧和惭愧不言而喻。但只要你还喜欢某样东西,适当用最佳方式接近她,那就是纵然荒诞也无妨的最好托词。而聆听音乐、摇滚乐最好的地理位置当然也只能是在现场。

2013年6月15日和16日,我们又一次奔赴这场每年一度的音乐盛会。

张扬个性

最近几年,来自新疆的舌头乐队在年轻人中一直很火。他们不羁的个性和狂躁的声音,很好地诠释了年轻人在这个社会里的诉求。在场外,笔者与“舌头”零距离接触,不过,沉默寡言的他们,几乎不理睬别人的问题。除了跟工作人员提要求,主唱吴吞和其他人只是埋头调试自己的乐器,其间留着长发的乐队吉他手总会很客气地跟人说“谢谢”。

但是,一到场内,“舌头”的个性就像打了鸡血一样释放出来。作为晚上最后一个压轴登场的乐队,“舌头”一登场,就赢来了一片尖叫。乐队新歌《旋转》的前奏刚一响起,大家都不约而同地站起来。有人拿出手机拍始终双手抱着麦克风唱歌的吴吞,更有人在舞台上就打听了起来,“这首歌叫什么?以前没听过,太震撼了!”

舞台上的“舌头”看起来真的不需要太多浮夸的修饰,只要是他们几个人,只要他们都拿着自己的乐器,就能唱出令人热血沸腾的声音。不得不说,吴吞的气场真的很强,如果你在现场听他唱歌,你会发现他喉咙里唱出的绝对不是什么凶猛怪兽,而是足以摧毁一切浮躁和虚伪的“武器”。每一个旋律都像是生有倒刺和腿脚,不管你是站在沙漠还是草地上听,都会被他们低调又充满厚重感的旋律“按”在原地。

来自德国的DON VITO乐队则表现出与“舌头”不一样的异域个性。一上台,就露出了他们噪音摇滚的本质:主唱Heiko一边扭着自己吉他的按钮,第一句就是让音控“能不能把声音再开大点”。第一声音乐响起来,就像炸开了一个雷,鼓手捶着鼓点,满面通红,青筋暴露。乐队主唱并不唱歌,而是偶尔用喉咙发出高亢或沙哑的嘶吼。就算不站在音箱旁边,也会被他们的音乐震得胸腔“嗡嗡”作响。

虽然被称作“噪音摇滚”,但DON VITO显然不止发出“噪音”而已。许多人听完DON VITO演唱后都表示“很想一起宣泄出来”。德国乐迷Daniel曾如此形容:“如果你去看DON VITO的现场,你会发现他们可以将很多乐队吹到外太空。”DON VITO一下舞台,就表示“西湖音乐节的舞台比想象中大”,但是也让他们“没法和乐队的其他成员眼神交流”。彩排刚一结束,他们就在后台喝起了冰啤酒。

在舞台上制造“噪音”,现实生活中的他们却十分安静。鼓手Christian的爱好是“和女友一起看电影”,而贝斯手Susi的爱好则是“跟着乐队一起坐火车旅行”。工作人员告诉笔者,音乐节之前的一天,刚到杭州的他们还来不及品尝本地美食,便草草在“沙县”解决了午饭,就赶到太子湾进行排练。投入、敬业、个性,是他们留给杭州乐迷的所有印象。

释放青春

李志是西湖音乐节的老朋友了,很多人也许忘不了他在2010年西湖音乐节上的表现:李志一边喊着“一斤理想多少钱”,一边朝舞台下撒了一把百元大钞。时隔三年后李志归来,他表示“不能老玩那一套吧”,只会正正经经演出。

可不是么?青春,不光只有颓废,还应该有颓废过后的理性与睿智。算上自己,这次李志带着9人团队登台,包括三位伴唱者和键盘手、贝斯手、鼓手……

舞台上,李志的装束与三年前相差无几:穿着黑T恤、灰色中裤,小平头,一双哥伦比亚运动鞋。他一米七出头的身形挤在工作人员中间毫不显眼。上台一开嗓,就是那首曾经来过西湖音乐节的《关于郑州的记忆》,三年前听过这首歌的人,这次应该会有不一样的感受:9个人的乐队让这次的演出更加立体也更加饱满,李志不再是那个嘶吼的李志,如今李志是一个团队,他的演出也更加专业。

随后,《天空之城》《被禁忌的游戏》《这个世界会好吗》这些李志的保留曲目也一一上演。随着李志温柔的嗓音响起,许多工作人员都被他的声音吸引过来驻足在舞台前,听得出了神。

李志离开舞台的时候,还有不少人找他合影。他掏出手机,拍了舞台,还拍了主舞台正对面太子湾的“大风车”。天幕暗下来,光束穿透黑夜,别的歌手登场的时候,李志一个人远远地站在音控区看着舞台,出神地听着别人唱不同味道的歌……

确如西湖音乐节的发起人、杭州《都市快报》副总编辑朱建说的那样:“音乐节能提供参与者最大的自由和快乐,时间长,选择多,呈现形态多样。现场是最有魅力的一种文化形态,一个人听音乐是一个人的感受;身处群体中时,他感受更多。在音乐节上体验不同乐队的表演形态、歌手状态,与歌手互动,这种现场气氛不可复制。”

留住记忆

相比于第一天演出的个性十足,第二天则更加多彩纷呈。从杭州本土乐队到国内一流或噱头十足的音乐人吴莫愁、戴佩妮、达明一派,现场气氛都被调节至一种舒服和恰当的节奏。年轻人当然是主力,纵然阳光暴晒,能在草坪上跟台上乐队做一个现场的呼应是亢奋之事。

来自马来西亚的才女歌手戴佩妮,在登台演出之后,马上就在微博上发问下一届还会不会请她。她说:“音乐节总有一股很神奇的力量,让我能用音乐交到很多的朋友之余,也感受到再年轻一次的澎湃!谢谢西湖音乐节的邀请,请问下一届我还能够来吗?自己先报名。”

在第二天的演出现场,还有一个奇妙的细节:当吴莫愁与戴佩妮演出结束后,大批乐迷踩着泥泞的草地离场。乐评人朱白说,这并非是压轴的“达明一派”人气不够,而是杭州的乐迷市场已经开始成熟细分,“年轻的时髦民谣粉丝和摇滚老炮怀旧乐迷……每个人都找到了自己所爱,并尽情挥洒这种爱。人只有先认清了到底什么是我喜欢的才算是一种成熟,不是所有好的都要据为己有。”

对于一个城市来说,从来都需要“新鲜”注入,对于杭州这种历史老城来说更是需要不时有新鲜的气态进行一轮又一轮融合乃至洗涤。而所谓新鲜,除了现代化象征意味的科技之外,更要有人格魅力和年轻姿态之类的精神物质—西湖音乐节所呈现出来的温和态度及年轻符号就是这种精神物质。

比如更适合录音室作品的大忘杠乐队,素人一般地出现,融合了民族和极端自我的音乐可能有一种注定的偏远感,让现场的年轻人很难靠近;比如一场传奇的宋雨喆,用厚重的嗓音和四两拨千斤的歌词将现场搅动起来,新任的朝鲜族女伴唱也实打实地将自己的高音贯穿了全场。如果说音乐节还有一项推广多元音乐的功能的话,那么像“大忘杠”之类就应该频繁地出现在更多的舞台上。

城市不需要太贪婪,有时候一点纯粹而简单的东西反而可以成为城市里的一项标志。西湖音乐节与杭州正是这种轻松地进入、融合和相互影响的关系。我甚至猜想,音乐节的现场一定也有慕名前来的观众,他们会因为这一次而爱上音乐。对于音乐节来说,这样的莫名其妙的偶遇当然也是其功用之一。“音乐节”三个字只有轻松、可爱时,它才呈现出可爱和贴近都市人群的一面。难道每个城市不都应该拥有一个这样的年度性音乐节吗?

德国乐队DON VITO主唱背后的T恤,写着“年轻的声音,自由的声音”,也许用这句话来概括西湖音乐节再好不过了。

West Lake Music Festival: Youthful and Open Singing

Since its debut in 2008, West Lake Music Festival has been a legend. Unlike its counterparts such as Midi Music Festival and Strawberry Music Festival, West Lake Music Festival in Hangzhou highlights unbridled expressions of youth and passion. It does not connect itself with commercial endorsements nor does it present commercial themes.

From June 15 to 16 this year, I attended the festival. The venue was Prince Bay Park, a large park adjacent to the scenic West Lake. On the large lawns spreading at the foot of wooded hills, people gathered to appreciate different genres of singing.

Individualism

Tongue, a band from Xinjiang, has been a phenomenon in recent years. Temperament and huge noise are hallmarks of the young band. I watched the young musicians at zero distance. Off the stage, they were taciturn, ignoring people’s questions. They were busy tuning their musical instruments. They spoke with stage management team occasionally. But as soon as they came into the spotlight, they showed their true color. As the last band for the night, they occasioned shrieking from the audience. As soon as they kicked into their latest hit “Rotating”, the audience stood up and responded warmly to the strong rhythm and melody. Wu Tun, the lead singer, had an overwhelming charisma. His singing itself destroyed all the pomposity and hypocrisy. I was spellbound.

Don Vito, a German band, displayed a different personality. As soon as they stepped onto the stage, they displayed the quintessence of their loud R&R: the lead singer Heiko asked the sound controller to maximize the volume. The music burst into the air like a thunder. The drummer punctuated the melody at a tempo so fast that his face blushed. The lead singer did not sing actually. He roared now and then. The music was so loud that I did not have to stand by the acoustics to vibrate with the melody. Many among the audience said they felt like riding on the music. Though they made huge noises on the stage, I learned that they are quiet in everyday life.

Li Zhi is a star of the festival many people remember. He made his debut in 2010 at the festival. Many people remember him throwing away of 100 yuan banknotes away while asking how much one would paid for a kilo of aspiration. This year, he said he would not repeat the trick. With a nine-member band, he staged a decent performance. He sang his classics including Memory of Zhengzhou, City in Sky, Banned Game, and Will This World Become Better. The performance attracted quite a few people.

After the show, many fans came forward to take a photo with Li Zhi. Li Zhi did not leave immediately. He stood near the sound control area and listened to other singers.

Choices

If the performances on the first day displayed a galaxy of personalities, the second day of the festival presented a full range of different styles. Some local bands as well as singers of domestic renown performed and wowed audiences. Many young people stayed in the park in the sweltering heat. Penny Tai, a talented singer of Malaysia, wondered if she would be invited again to the festival next year shortly after her successful performance at the park.

On the second day, many fans left after Wu Mochou and Penny Tai sang their songs, ignoring the last show by Tat Ming Pair, a band of two from Hong Kong. The music critic Zhu Bai commented that people left not because the Tat Ming was not attractive, but because they were not interested in the band. He pointed out that this walkout indicated that music enthusiasts in Hangzhou had matured, knowing what they wanted and what they did not want. Many young people love ballads whereas many areenthusiasts of R&R. They come to find what they want at the festival.

Organizers prefer the musical festival to go this way. A city steeped in history, Hangzhou needs new voices, leaves some old charms behind to create room for the new, and gets modernized in its appreciation of the new. West Lake Music Festival provides music lovers with choices. Bands and singers are most willing to establish themselves at the festival.
